With advance booking, we offer complimentary field trips for elementary and middle school students at the historic Eagle Tavern in Watkinsville.
The Eagle Tavern is one of the earliest surviving structures in Oconee County. We do not know the exact date of construction of the tavern but we do know it was operating by 1801 when Watkinsville was a frontier town on the edge of Creek and Cherokee territory. The tavern served as a local meeting place, a rest stop for travelers and a mercantile store.
Students touring the Eagle Tavern will learn about everyday life in post-revolutionary Georgia. Our guides cover Georgia history, Oconee County history and how ordinary citizens in this new frontier lived their everyday life.
