“A Great Day in Oconee County”
Start your day off at the Eagle Tavern Museum (26 N. Main Street). The tavern, opened in 1801, served as a tavern and stage coach stop between Milledgeville and Athens for over 100 years and later served as a hotel. Guests can view artifacts and scenes from the 19th century way of life.
After the tour of the museum, visit the many unique historic downtown shops located all within walking distance. If you are a fan of comics, Mr. Comic Shop (18 N. Main Street) is the coolest place in town where you will find weekly comics, back issues, vintage comics, magazines, action figures and more. Insider Tip: New issues arrive on Wednesdays. Looking for your newest treasure? With a number of local antique stores in the area, including Attic Treasures (19 N. Main Street) located next to the Oconee County Welcome Center (21 N. Main Street), you are bound to find a unique piece that has a story to tell.
Just a block off Main Street is the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation (34 School Street). OCAF’s Cultural Arts Center, the 1902 OCAF Art Center, provides exhibition space for local artists and galleries of all aspects. Join the resident artists in making art of your own or simply view firsthand as the magic takes shape before your eyes. Make sure to check the calendar for the event / exhibit schedules. Tip: You do not want to miss the annual Perspectives: Georgia’s Pottery Invitational.
Chappelle Gallery (25 South Main Street) is a local treasure that you shouldn’t pass up. The Chappelle Gallery is located in the historic Haygood House and is home to over 125 artists works from all over the United States. While you are here, also ask about Happy Valley Pottery (1210 Carson Graves Road, Watkinsville, GA). Happy Valley Pottery, which is located 8.5 miles from town, offers on site demonstrations from the resident artists.
You will also want to visit Elder Mill Covered Bridge. Erected in 1897, it is one of only 13 covered bridges still standing in Georgia. Insider Tip: It’s a great photo spot.
This summer make sure to stop at Washington Farms (5671 Hog Mountain Rd) to pick your own delicious and juicy strawberries, blueberries and blackberries.
At Thomas Orchard (6091 Macon Highway), Oconee’s premier greenhouse, nursery, and home of the local peach orchard, guests can cool off with a cup of old fashion handmade peach ice-cream or browse through the unique nursery and gift shop.
